Music and Sounds

Image
Sound is an extremely important component of any film. Without the sound in our movie it would definitely look and sound awkward with just silence in the background. The sound reflects the current situation and circumstance. It can build suspense and tension that something bad or ominous might occur and it can also indicate the mood of the current scene. In our movie opener there was a wide variety of sounds and music that was used throughout the 2 minutes and each sound or background music was intentionally or deliberately placed to add meaning, emotion, and effect to the viewers and the audience. The usage of these sounds and music makes the movie opener so much more appealing and immersive so it really goes to show the power of sound and just having a beautiful shot isn’t enough. The value of the shot goes hand in hand with what you hear as well as what you see. Which reminds me of what the Beacon guy told us when he came to provide us with knowledge and aid. That one advice w...

Updated costume analysis

Image
For our new costuming, in this new plot, the mis en scene was definitely more enforced and obvious for the audience to understand and perceive than the first plot of the mentally ill brother and the clean and sober brother. In this plot, we have a young little girl who went to the park and is playing with her toys and dolls. It was important to show the youth of this girl because it shows how naive and innocent she was. Which ultimately makes the audience feel scared for her and want to protect her from the evil harm that will inevitably come in her way. Making the costume was also much easier to put together as Maylynn was able to dig through her closet and find something that a girl of 5-8 years old would wear. I think she did a great job as she implemented accessories, hairstyle, and the clothing all coming together in a theme of juvenile style . As seen in the pictures listed, Hailey wears one outfit through the entirety of the movie opener. We can see how she wears a bright ...

Blog Makeover

Image
I think it was about time that we did a little makeover to how my blog looked like. I haven’t touched the look and appearance of my blog since the beginning of the year because it was just a aesthetic jellyfish picture and calm neutral tones that I thought reflected my personality and told the readers much about me and my character. Blog posts reflect what you think and feel at the current moment. Or your opinions and comments about something that occurred to you. Moreover, the way your blog looks like to you and to others, makes all the difference. It will definitely let someone know what your blog is about and what is going on in your life. In my case, the current center of attention of my time in this class was going towards this final project. Naturally, the readers and anyone else reading this blog should also know the work behind our final project and what it will entail of. Therefore, the soon coming of the final project being revealed to you all, I thought we might as turn...

Specific camera shots and angles

Image
There were many interesting shots we took in this movie opening. Throughout the year we were able to receive great knowledge of how a shot can express so much through the way it is perceived by the audience. The way it is framed, how close up, far away, how it is composed, and etc could make one shot have a completely new and rich meaning to it. We strived to have such complexity and diversity in our camera shots even if it is a 2 minute film. It was really interesting to see how creative you can get with the shots and what evokes certain emotions and feelings. Because we were making a horror film it was imperative that we get across this suspenseful and scary feelings to the audience. During the filming at the playground I got to see how we implemented our knowledge of shots into real life footage which was interesting and very helpful in better understanding why directors are masters at their craft.  Some of the types of shots we had where a point of view shot where the ki...

Editing Part 2

Image
For our second day of editing, we had to edit all of our movie opening as the deadline was approaching really soon. Over the spring break was when we were all supposed to come together and edit however, we were all busy and had severe scheduling issues. So after coming back from break Jason and Jaden edited our movie opening in a few hours. They were commendable and were able to bring our vision to life. They made sure to cut things so that it flowed well and seem cohesive. Furthermore they also put in the sound effects and foleys that will make the movie opener more immersive and enjoyable. I think they did a great job in a rushed time where we had to get everything done at the latest time.  Between this second editing date and the first there was another day of shooting where the rest of the group got done the scene at the house where Hailey is getting ready to go out and is putting on her outfit. Also the scene at the car is done of Hailey and her dad driving to the playground. ...

Day 2 of Shooting

Image
Our second day of shooting was actually our first day for filming the new plot. Me, Maylynn, Jason, and Jaden met up at our local park and filmed the playground scenes of the movie opener. Though the opener starts out at Hailey’s house, with our scheduling and overall consensus that the playground scenes are easier to film, we decided to record out of order. First of all, compared to the first day we recorded for the previous plot, we met up from 5-7 pm. However we didn’t have the privilege to record that late as these shots have to be recorded in the morning because it’s a playground park scene and kids typically play in the morning. So we all had to drive to the playground right after school and we were there from around 3:30-5 pm. When arriving there we faced issues right off the start. To record we had to make sure no other kids got in the way of filming because they were obviously much younger than the actor and were actual kids and they were also loud. We couldn’t tell them...

Representation

Image
In our movie opener, we represent an adolescent little girl who gets kidnapped while going out to the playground. She is a naive and innocent girl who seems to represent much of children in their adolescence as she isn’t mature and sharp like an adult would be but she also isn’t completely defenseless. As at some point in the movie opener you can see her hesitation when she felt that she was being stalked and felt a threatening presence. The other actor in this is the guy in a clown mask that is the main antagonist whom ends up kidnapping the young girl. His features aren’t disclosed as his identity is concealed by the mask but you can tell that he is seemingly young from his body physicality and his hands that are visible to the screen. He is representing the psychotic and dangerous people in society that people need to look out for when it comes to themselves as well as individuals who are more vulnerable and susceptible to such acts of terrors and aggression. The two actors ar...

Updated Main Character Analysis

Image
With the new plot, so did a new main character emerge in our movie opener. In our last plot the main two characters where two young adults Jason and Jaden Davis. The two of them were very complex and had several layers to their characters including mental illness, depression, and more. In stark contrast our new main character is Hailey Davis, a girl who is also less than half the age of Jason and Jaden Davis. To begin her character doesn’t have labyrinthine and elaborate traits as Jason and Jaden as she is just a kid. We get to see her so child-like things as well of her in her natural element unlike the previous plot where there was no scene of Jason and Jaden on a day to day basis. We see Hailey play with her dolls as a prop. These dolls drive home the idea of how juvenile Hailey is and lets the audience connect to her more by seeing her play on her own. She is free spirited and a little girl full of life. She doesn’t have any ill intentions, she is like any other regular child...

Updated Storyboard

Image
Our updated storyboard, has entirely different scenes and shots as previously explained, we changed up our entire plot. It begins with Hailey Davis at her house playing with her dolls. We see her close her door and then put on her shoes to go outside. We cut to her father who opened the door and left and then Hailey walked outside. Then we cut to them opening up the car doors. A close up of the car radio is shown on the screen and you can hear the radio discuss the prospects of more and more kidnappings in the town. We see a camera shot from the backseat perspective showing Hailey and her Dad riding. This is all while the radio is still playing in the background. The car stops and Hailey gets out of the car, before she can close the door, her father tells her to be safe. Hailey tells him that she will and then proceeds to close the door. Furthermore, she walks happily towards the playground. After she gets there she opens up the gate. Her hand opening the latch will be a close up...

Group Dynamics

Image
Our group has been very active and efficient in making sure that we all have a project that we will be proud of submitting to.  Throughout the process all of our roles have changed and adapted to what better accustoms us and what each person is capable of doing to contribute to the final project. I think we all have clear communication with each other which definitely helps as we only have around a week before the project is due but i’m confident and not stressed because we already have much completed and are in the final stages of editing and finalizing. Making it this far is solely due to the hard work that each member has put into and you can tell how much effort everyone has put in, with multiple filming dates and more. After being in this group i have learned a lot more about my friends in my group and I think we’ve all grown closer which helped with our dynamics. Everyone has carried their weight with as much as they can do and everyone has their ow...

Our new plot

Image
As said before in my previous blog about sound, we made a new plot and I said how I was going to delve deeper into that. Now is the time that I do that because this new plot has been much more cohesive and surely has made our job easier. Though we changed our plot kinda late into the year, it was done out of necessity. Our first plot was essentially a trailer and not a movie opener and also required some high level acting that us without any acting experience could just simply not attain without making the movie opener look unserious and goofy. Our first plot was about two brothers and one of them going missing and essentially becoming a sadist murderer. After just one day of filming that initial plot we as a group went onto our new plot of “Gone” (i’m not sure if that is the final title but it’s what we did in the title sequence.) Overall this new plot was much more cohesive, and is still an interesting story to indulge in as it has real world implications that the audience woul...

Lighting

Image
Compared to a multimillion budget dollar movie that has the capabilities to manipulate lighting to exactly convey what the director wants in minute details, our group was still able to create meaning with our lighting. The beginning of the movie opener features Haley at her house and that is a mixture of natural lighting as well as artificial lighting from equipment we got from Becon Tv. The mixture of these lights allowed a perfect balance in the room and made the movie opener look more appealing to the eye. The beginning scene is high key lighting and that was done on purpose as the exposition is all about exposing the audience to Hailey’s naivety and her child like behavior. It is supposed to be a happy sequence of just a child in her natural environment playing around and having fun like every other kid. The lighting isn’t too bright and natural and lights up the whole frame. So it was perfect for the beginning sequence of our movie opener. Then, a the scenes at the playgroun...

Editing

Image
For our editing of the movie opener it will mainly be Jaden and Maylynn. Jaden has the software that we need to edit our movie opener. He has adobe premiere pro which he receives for free as he has a class that gives him access to it. Adobe is a great resource to edit our video on as it provides a stable foundation for people who already have a background in editing to further delve and put into practice of the various aspects of video editing as well as developing their stories through the visuals of a film. Though it is more complex than most other platforms such as iMovie, capcut, etc. I am confident in our editors as they are talented to handle more intricate means of editing as they have previous experience and Adobe will provide a much more detailed, and extensive control over the editing of the movie that one would not otherwise attain in a basic editing program.  For our video effects and transitions it will consist of basic cuts from one scene of the play ground to another...

Title Sequence

Image
For our title sequence, we had to encapsulate the main premise of our movie opener confined into one sequence. So it was imperative to put in key aspects of our movie opener into the title sequence through the visuals, font, color, and style. All of us in our group took the liberty to make our own creative title sequence, each with our own take on it, enabling a wider range to pick from. It was interesting to see everyone interpreting the movie in a slightly different perspective. Which goes to show that different things stand out to different viewers. A title sequence should let the audience know what is the genre of the movie and I think all of our title sequences were able to convey the mystery/horror genre as it all is dark and slightly eerie to look at. Furthermore, all of the title sequences were made easily and was not something that required extensive skills as we are not professionals at graphic designing. I made two title sequences, my main one being the ti...
