Lighting
Compared to a multimillion budget dollar movie that has the capabilities to manipulate lighting to exactly convey what the director wants in minute details, our group was still able to create meaning with our lighting. The beginning of the movie opener features Haley at her house and that is a mixture of natural lighting as well as artificial lighting from equipment we got from Becon Tv. The mixture of these lights allowed a perfect balance in the room and made the movie opener look more appealing to the eye. The beginning scene is high key lighting and that was done on purpose as the exposition is all about exposing the audience to Hailey’s naivety and her child like behavior. It is supposed to be a happy sequence of just a child in her natural environment playing around and having fun like every other kid. The lighting isn’t too bright and natural and lights up the whole frame. So it was perfect for the beginning sequence of our movie opener.
Then, a the scenes at the playground were all from the suns natural lighting. At the beginning when we see Haley walk on the road and play with some toys the sun is shining lighter and it is still morning time. This is because the plot is still developing Haley’s character and how she is a kid. She plays with some toys walks by the playground which is just to establish her presence there. Then in stark contrast to what the audience has seen thus far, the sun is at sunset and it is a orangey dark color. This lowkey lighting can evoke an eerie feeling as it is an intense lighting effect that shows how Hayley is in trouble. There is much more shadows that can be seen such as her shadow on the swings. The sunset light was also natural from the sun itself. If we had more budget then like a big movie production we’d control our lighting to every aspect possible with artificial lighting. Even for the playground scenes and use these artificial lighting to create intricate and visually appealing effects on the scenes. But we do not have that kind of money or privilege so we did the best we could!
