Brainstorming

Our group had many ideas that we wanted to explore for our movie opening. We knew we wanted to have a funeral scene with one of the members acting to die, and then his brother/best friend going to his funeral. That was the basis and we delved into how we can further develop that plot line. Some positives for this idea would be that it is unique and interesting. The cinematography/mis en scene would also look eye catching as it could be cold hue saturation on film, or it could be rainy with the funeral attendees holding black umbrellas much like the Hollywood films. We thought that not many people would have come up with a death/funeral idea and that it mirrors an actual Hollywood film opening. Furthermore, you can encompass a variety of different genres into it. For example, we could have done crime/mystery where the circumstances surrounding the characters death was not disclosed and troubling the characters friend who tries to discover the reason why. We also could have done horror where the incident/cause of death of the character is of a scary nature. Or there could have been a dramatic genre where following the characters death his friend becomes an addict and becomes a drug addict of some sort. So, we discussed all the possible scenarios and genres which this idea enabled us to make inquiries in.

Nevertheless, it was important to also consider possible hindrances to this idea. A funeral is a very specific set/location. Firstly, it couldn’t be open casket funeral because that would take a lot of resources and a high budget so it was out the question. Therefore, it had to be already buried grave. We didn’t want to go to an actual cemetery so we thought of buying a Halloween-esque gravestone prop to create an illusion or set that the character is at a funeral holding. Additionally, we knew that the character was going to die in unforeseen conditions such as murder, or an accident which would also be difficult to orchestrate onto our film. Thus the film opening requires a lot of additional factors to make it work and feel authentic. However, we do want to try and make this idea work as it is something that the entire group has decided upon to make our film on, so we will work around these obstacles and make the opening look seamless.
