What I’ve learned - Recap
Throughout this entire year, I have learned so much about film that I won’t ever watch a movie, show, or even social media content the same… Whether that’s a good thing where I can analyze a film more or a bad thing that I’ll be paying attention to shots and angles rather than someone else watching just enjoying the story. But I have proven myself by learning about so much. I looked back at my old blog posts and come to think how much i’ve grown this year in my knowledge of media and film. Shots, angles, composition, sound, editing, etc all these components where something I barely ever thought about but now I understand these concepts and techniques and i’m grateful for knowing these. Learning these aspects and seeing examples of these techniques in actual movies and films in school was a great outlet for me to be exposed to the craft of filmmaking. And then, coming together with my group and making this movie opening with my group and physically creating a movie made my respect go up for these cinema makers as it requires a great deal of time, effort, and innovation to make it art.
The reason I took media studies was because I love movies. I literally watch movies all the time. Whether going to the theater to watch whatever new film that came out, or streaming them at home. Oh do I abuse the streaming services I have. I’m talking watching a show or movie while doing school work, while eating, during free time, or before bed. It has always been a big part of my life. I love romcoms (my favorite movie being How to lose a guy in 10 days!!), dramas, action, fantasy, sci-fi. I have a huge list of movies and shows that I like on my notes app that I always hand out recommendations to friends and family. I didn’t really have much of an idea what this course would contain of but I am extremely glad I did take this course as now I will get to watch my favorite shows and cinemas with a profound appreciation and understanding to what went behind the curtains that made the scene i’m watching be possible. Now I can also give recommendations based on the cinematography not just how I liked the story. I think that this course was basically perfect for me without me even realizing. I remember ever since I was a kid, whenever me and my family friends, or cousins would meet up, we’d make some low budget, comedic and dramatic movie together. It’d always be on one of our parents phones and we’d edit on iMovie. We made these short films for fun with each other and I remember this one movie we made where one kid got bullied by another kid but at the end they ended up falling love. Yea, you can laugh at it, even we did. But what I takeaway was that I would never be acting, I was always the director, telling them what to say, how to say it, where to position them, where to position the camera, sounds that should be made. Though I didn’t have the same understanding I have now, I think it shows my passion I’ve always had for film and how now years later i’m able to explore this adoration of mines and learn how filming works. It’s been great having this course and I truly will hold it close to me forever because I don’t think my hobby of watching movies and shows will go away any time soon, especially now that I can analyze it even better.
