Title sequence research
Title sequences are the opening of the movie that deploys several tactics of introducing the film and can use a variety of editing software. It gives the audience a general gist of the aesthetics and genre of the film. Moreover, lets them know cast members, and gives credit to the director and the producer.
The first film that I decided to delve further into was Enchanted (2007)
Enchanted had a very aesthetic and creative title sequence. It essentially portrays how the plot of the movie will unfold from a fairytale/fantasy book. It zooms in on the book and then flips through the "pages" with the graphics having displays of basic fantasy aspects. For example, carriages, roses, forbidden apples, a guy and a girl in love, a mermaid, a heel, and etc. Simultaneously, it has text of the cars, the producer, actors, and etc. This gives a fantasy and light hearted mood to the movie and the audience can expect to see whimsical. The font also reinforces the fantasy aspect as it looks like it is from a fairytale story with the intricate, feminine designs.
All in all, Enchanted was a great display of a title sequence because it is fully able to grasp and encapsulate the ambiance of the film. It successfully caters to the audience who are most likely little girls. Furthermore, the title sequence is also visually appealing and eye catching to the viewers and as a result they may be more inclined to pay attention. It is a testament to how Disney's big budget can foster a high-end title sequence.
The second film I decided to do was Spiderman into the spider verse (2018)
Into the Spider-Verse is another big budget title-sequence that also was able to depict the aesthetics and cinematography that the film will provide. It has comic-esque art as a nod to the Spiderman comics and provides a sense of originality. There's several Spiderman going through different universes and this sequence is fast-paced. Which goes to show how dynamic and thrilling the film will be. To introduce cast members or the director, there's graphics that write the individuals name under "Hello my name is" in the font of what one would see in a comic book. Which is a clever way to stay on theme to the aesthetics while still fulfilling the purpose of a title sequence, if the editor had used another basic font then it wouldn't have the same comic, child-like effect that this title sequence was able to acheive.
Spider-verse utilizes a memorable art style that kids and fans of the film will anticipate prior to the movie starting. Its dynamic pacing and editing creates suspense and thrill to what is upcoming. It is on brand and makes this Spiderman stand out and be unique to all the other Spider man adaptations because it uses the animation to its advantage. All in all the title sequence was well put together and is fulfilling the goals of a title sequence.
The third title sequence I did was Game of Thrones (2011)
Game of thrones cleverly employs 3-D animation to introduce its show. it is a 3-D animation of a world map where it delves into each island or nation and creates visuals while simultaneously giving credit to the people behind the show. Then it goes from island to island while doing the same thing. The cinematography is great for the Game Of Thrones vibe as it portrays images of dragons and swords much about the premise of Game of Thrones so the viewer can grasp how the show will consist of. It is also slow paced and takes time in exploring each part of the map which are labeled making the title sequence a guide to the places in the universe of Game of Thrones. Which is a innovative tactic as it makes the title sequence be persistent with the show and it’s made up places. The font of this also emphasizes the ancient/historical aspect that this show entails as the font looks like what one would see in ancient manuscripts from old scriptures.
Moreover, the title sequence is filled with details to portray how the Mis En Scene and genre of the show will be like. The instrumental music gives a medieval ambiance showing how it takes place long ago. The animation of the scenery and setting with wooden architecture also shows how this is a period drama and not something from the current world. At the end of the title sequence it zooms out to the logo which has many references to the show including mystical creatures, regal patterns, and fire. The viewer is certainly able to pick up on what the show will entail and where it will take place.
